Summer Intensive, June 28-July 9th, 2010

dancEnlight offers their second year Summer Intensive from 6/28-7/9, 2010 at Connecticut Concert Ballet . The program immerses dance lovers, professionals & non-professionals in a two-week dance experience instructed by exceptional and loving faculty including the fabulous guest teachers Natalie Desch, a current member of Doug Varone & Dancers Company; Paul Dennis, a former member and current guest artist with the Jose Limon Dance Company; dancEnlight artistic director, Lorelei Chang and company members. We offer a wide variety of classes such as Ballet, contemporary techniqiue, Pilates, Yoga, Qigong, performance skill, improvisation and composition, creative tools,massage for dancers, silent morning, modern partnering and repertory. The workshop ends with a performance on the last day of the intensive, Friday afternoon. Please invite your family and friends to come and enjoy this free in-studio showing.

Please faculty bios below...
Teachers' bios Lorelei Chang(Artistic Director) was raised and trained as professional dancer in Beijing, China. She is currently an adjunct faculty member at The University of Hartford and The Hartt Community Division, Theater and Dance at the Trinity College, and Connecticut Concert Ballet. She is also a veteran of Full Force Dance Theatre. She teaches Ballet, modern, composition, Pilates, Yoga and Qigong and her students are ages from 4-90 years old, she truly enjoys teaching wide range of classes and people.
Paul Dennis (Guest teacher), a former member of the Jose Lim n Dance Company, received his BFA in dance from the Juilliard School and an MFA including a certificate in Arts Management from Purchase College, State University of New York. Paul is Festival Director for the White Mountains Summer Dance Festival at Sarah Lawrence College and has performed with Works/Laura Glenn Dance and the Jacob's Pillow Men s Dancers: The Ted Shawn Legacy. He is on faculty at the Ted Hershey Dance and Music Marathon, guest artist/faculty at Mount Holyoke College, Amherst College and Springfield College where he has restaged seminal masterpieces of Ted Shawn, Jos Lim n and Doris Humphrey. Natalie Desch (Guest teacher), a Doug Varone and Dancers company member since 2001, is a native of New Castle, PA, where she began her dance training under the guidance of Deborah Parou. After receiving her BFA and the Martha Hill Prize from the Juilliard School, (Benjamin Harkarvy, director,) she joined the Limon Dance Company where she performed from 1996-2001. A faculty member at Hunter College, Desch has also taught at the Bates Dance Festival, the Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet, the 92nd Street Y, the Limon Institute and at Dance New Amsterdam in New York City, and has staged the works of Doug Varone, Jose Limon and Jiri Kylian. Her choreography has been presented at various venues around New York City and throughout the country.
Leslie Frye-Maietta(Company member) is a performer, educator and choreographer. She is a graduate of The University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA where she earned a B.F.A. in Modern Dance. She has studied under some of the most influential dance professionals and has worked alongside famous performance artists and world-renowned choreographers including Mia Michaels, George Faison and Isaboro Hanayagi. Leslie's versatile training has allowed her to have a diverse career which has led her to CT. Since making her home here, she is on Faculty at The Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts and The University of Hartford, Hartt School Community Division. Leslie is currently performing with Full Force Dance Theatre as well as dancEnlight, here in Hartford CT.
Tony Olivares(Company member) was born in Nicaragua, he has a forestry degree, massage therapy diploma, dance pedagogy diploma. Currently, Tony is getting his bachelor degree in theater and dance at Trinity College. He has trained and performed in Managua, Mexico, New York, Edmonton, Vancouver, Toronto, Calgary, Montreal, Banff Center, Bennington College, Earthdance, Northampton area and Connecticut area. Tony has been part of DancEnlight since the first concert. He is also continuing performing his solo work.

Modern technique class helps dancers develop a basic understanding on the use of weight, breathing and coordination skills and establish correct body alignment, strong sense of center while building body awareness and how it moves through space.
Modern Partnering class includes warm-up, explore partner work through contact improvisation, learning partnering phrases from the repertory as well as creating phrases of your own with your classmates.
Composition class is designed for the students with dance experience; learn choreographic elements of movement, space and time. This class is devoted to extensive exploration of choreographic technique and the utilization of music, sound, and spoken texts for dance choreography.
Performance Skill--This class will consider dance as a performing experience by examining how one can communicate more clearly and honestly. Observation and discussion will help to articulate both first-hand performing experience as well as viewing perception. The class will include detailed investigation of phrases, repertory selections, and/or creative assignments developed in class.
Pilates originally developed in early 20th-century Germany by physician Joseph H. Pilates to help strengthen and condition muscles. Pilates is the ultimate mind/body exercise for anyone who wants to tone, streamline and realign his or her body without the bulked-up results of more conventional workout methods.
Repertory-Students will learn the company's most recent work and some phrases from well-known choreography and perform at the end of program. This class helps students develop their potential performance skill. Students who take repertory class require to take Modern technique and improvisation/composition classes.
Qigong- (or ch'i kung) refers to a wide variety of traditional cultivation practices that involve methods of accumulating, circulating, and working with qi, breathing or energy within the body. This class teaches you how to channel your energy and using self-healing as a tool to rejuvenate your and nourish the body.

Modern DanceTechnique II
Modern dance technique II workshop consists of a series of technical exercises that increase skills of coordination and alignment while building strength, flexibility, and endurance. Class begins with warm-up exercises and progresses to rhythmic movement patterns that travel through space, building rhythmic, spatial, and dynamic skills. |
Modern Dance Partnering This workshop is offered for students who is looking for more than just the modern technique. The workshop includes warm-up, explore partner coordination through contact improvisation and composition, learning partnering phrases from repertory work as well as creating phrases of your own with your classmates.

Compostion & Improvisation This workshop introduces the fundamental tools for dance composition by exploring creative process through improvisation and various devices employed in constructing dances. Students will be responsible for developing several studies in dance composition, as well as choreography projects. Students will also be expected to contribute extensively to discussions about classroom work. |
Choreography 1 Dance choreography I is designed for students with dance experience. Learn the choreographic elements of movement, space and time. Ballet For Adult Beginners Have you ever dreamed of being a ballerina when you were a child but never had the opportunity or the courage to make it come true? Here is the chance for you to make that fantasy real. Have fun learning the basic ballet principles and techniques. We will perform a little ballet at the end of the semester. Please bring your family and friends for your first ballet show if you wish. You would need ballet slippers, dance attire and a sense of humor.

Ballet For Kids A beginning/intermediate level ballet class with an emphasis on developing a strong technical center for improving mobility through space and greater upper-body expression. A perfect exercise for the body and intellect. We will perform a "Ballet" at the end of semester. Please bring your family and friends to see your show. Dance attire and ballet slippers are required for this class.

Ballet technique I workshop with an emphasis on the basic of ballet techniques while building solid foundation as well as developing good balance, strong center and graceful expression through refined movements.

Ballet technique II workshop with an emphasis on developing a strong technical center for improving mobility through space and greater upper-body expression while continue refining ballet techniques.

Creative Movement For Age 5-9 Lorelei Chang created this workshop especially for young children; teach them the joy of moving to classical and contemporary music with vibrant and innovative approach. The workshop focuses on nourishing children's creativity, express it through movements and music, as well as appreciation through dance art form. Classes include dance games, storytelling, basic dance steps, improvisation, stretch, learning space, time in dance and many more. Come join us and have a fun! |
Junior Dance Camp
Program Director Lorelei Chang will guide students through the world of dance! Students will be exposed to different cultures and dance styles through various ethnic and folk dances. Students will participate in a daily ballet class followed by classes in Jazz, modern dance, improvisation and more. Dance related activities including action, story-telling, costume and prop design, stage makeup and choreography will also be featured. Each week will culminate with an in studio performance for parents, family and friends. Bring your camera!

Pilates
Pilates originally developed in early 20th-century Germany by physician Joseph H. Pilates to help strengthen and condition muscles. Pilates is the ultimate mind/body exercise for anyone who wants to tone, streamline and realign his or her body without the bulked-up results of more conventional workout methods. You will receive an introductory lesson and demonstration to this mat-based exercise which combines elements of yoga and bodywork to strengthen the core muscles of the abdomen; the power house, while increasing flexibility in the legs, arms, and smaller muscle groups. |
Stretch, Strengthen & Smile
Do you want to have more flexibility? Have stronger abs? Or perhaps just to have a better understanding of your own body? If your answer is yes, then this class is for you! This workshop focuses on the effective stretching techniques that will enhance muscular performance, increase strength, and endurance, improve overall range of motion. We will use variety of tools such as stretching band, rope, chair, and wall to help stretch different groups of muscles through Yoga, Pilates and other stretching methods.

Relaxation & Meditation
Being relaxed physically means letting go of muscular tensions, and being relaxed mentally means letting to of thinking,-mental tensions. You will be guided through gentle stretch, breathing techniques to achevie a higher level of relaxation and peace of mind.To be there for the experience and to see what's left, feel the energy you are made of and the consciousness that you are.

Chair Yoga For Seniors
Lorelei specially designed this program for seniors which focuses on gentle stretches with chanllenge but fun exercises that will help seniors to develope better balance, coordination and self-confidence. |
Introduction To Chinese Calligraphy Lorelei Chang is the Chinese Calligraphy award winners for Tokyo Museum for Jan, 2009. The workshop introduces you to the one of the most beautiful Chinese ancient fine arts, the Chinese calligraphy which has thousands of years of history. Chinese calligraphy is not only a practical technique for writing Chinese characters, but also a unique oriental art of expression, a tool to help easy physical y and mental tension, reduce stress and a great learning discipline. You will learn some basic elements, strokes and fundamental techniques of Chinese calligraphy brush work through this workshop. We will teach you to create your own piece of Chinese calligraphy on the traditional rice paper to take it home. Bring a friend or two and your high spirt. All supplies will be provided.
