JoyJoy/Music. Le, also pronounced Yue. The top part of the word shows silk strings stretched across a wooden frame, representing a gushing(Chinese zither). Some interpret the center part showing a circle with a horizontal line as representing the mouth of a singer. In either case, music is being played, and this makes both the performers and the audience joyous. $150

Joy,Tranquility, Dream, Zen(from left to right) |  | | 1. Joy/music. Le/Yue. The top part of the word shows silk strings stretched across a wooden frame, representing a gushing(Chinese zither). Some interpret the center part showing a circle with a horizontal line as representing the mouth of a singer. In either case, music is being played, and this makes both the performers and the audience joyous.
2.Dream. Meng. The two cross shapes above the rectangular symbol for "eye" indicate that the eyes are closed. Below is an enclosing shape, indicating someone curled up asleep. Inside this shape is the sign for "night." One is curled asleep at night, dreaming. When we awaken and are able to see clearly, what will it be like.
3.Stillness. Jing, silence or tranquility. On the left side is the character for "purity." On the right side is the phonetic meaning "competition" through the depiction of two wrangling hands. The word for "purity" also implies clarity and transparency and, by extension, here means that the competition on the right is diminished to nearly nothing. Stillness comes when there is a cessation of competition.
4.Zen. Chan. On the left side of the character is the word for "clothing." On the right is the character for "simple" which represents simple life. "less is more" as Zen principle.

SoundSound. Sheng. Above is a phonetic, below is a sign of "ear." The deepest sound is silence. This may seem paradoxical only if we regard silence as an absence of life and vibration. But for a meditator, silence is a sound that unifies all aspects of its opposite. It is both sound and soundless, and it is in this confluence that the power of meditation ermerges. $150 SOLD

ReminisceReminisce. Nian. To recite, to read, to chat, to consider, thought,reflection, recollection, memory. Below is the character for "heart," above is the character for "to be present." This is shown by the triangle that symbolizes union coupled with a hand that is touching someone(indicating contact). Recitation of knowledge is present in the mind ("heart" & "mind" are considered synonymous). The purpose of recitation is to make knowledge so ingrained that the true human can come out. $150

CraneCrane, He. The crane has long been an auspicious symbol in Chinese culture; next to the Phoenix, it is the most important bird in Chinese lengends and Chinese art. The crane is believed to be immortal and is the most common of many symbols representing longevity. $150

None/Without/Negation/No None/Without/Negation/No, Wu. This is a pure phonetic borrowing from the word for "dance." What is not there is just as important as what is there. $65

HappinessHappiness, Fu. The left side of the word means a revelation from heaven and is used in all words with abstract meanings. The right portion of the word with the top part for "beans", and "field" on the bottom. When the beans are harvested, people are happy. All the abundance is provided by Tao/Dao, the "way". If we appreciate if, we could see that we are surrounded by happiness. $65
